Beyerdynamic DT 990 PRO Studio Monitoring Headphones Review

The Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro is one of the famed studio monitoring headphones from the brand that many consider as one of the best in the world. Music lovers and recording engineers alike have chosen this range for a quarter of a century now due to the open, clear and clean sound it provides. Founded in 1924 in Berlin by electrical engineer Eugen Beyer, the company has become synonymous with a number of high-quality and professional audio products.

The DT 990 Pro is part of Beyerdynamic’s DT Pro series, which caters for professional monitoring applications. Despite its “Pro” standing, many amateur sound engineers and producers, as well as audiophiles, also choose to use these headphones on a daily basis.

Features of the Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro studio monitoring headphones

In terms of design, the best word that describes the DT 990 Pro studio headphones is ‘robust’. Thanks to its high-quality parts, it can be dropped a few times without sustaining any real damage. Not that it’d be a thing in the studio, but its robust construction means it’ll last you a long time. The model is also designed to offer extreme comfort to users and comes with Velour ear cups that are soft as silk.  The DT 990 Pro studio monitoring headphones are of the “open back” variety.

As the DT 990 Pro is quite large, it’s not particularly portable, nor is it particularly storage-friendly since the coiled cable is 9.84 ft and there’s no way to detach it.  These are minor points that don’t particularly impact the product’s function in a studio environment.

The DT 990 Pro has an impedance of 250 ohms with a frequency response of 5-35,000 Hz.

Performance

As advertised, the Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro studio monitoring headphones are indeed very comfortable. Many have noted that even after very long sessions, they remain to be very comfortable on the ears. Those who have had the headphones for years now have also praised their durability.

Sound-wise, the DT 990 Pro monitoring headphones are well-balanced and clear. Those who love to listen to a lot of bass will undoubtedly appreciate these studio headphones. The midrange is smooth and can be warm and dynamic without being harsh. The high end is good although some comments from users that it can be a little too pronounced at times. The sound stage is also wide and excellent and the instruments are well-separated. They perform extremely well for mainstream music, including rock, dubstep, pop, hip-hop, RnB, and dance. Noise isolation is not perfect with these headphones, so expect a little bit of sound leakage, which can be expected from any open-back design.  This makes them best suited to mixing and critical listening.

We’re totally sold on the Beyerdynamic DT 990 PROs. These things have a great sound, excellent sound quality, are very comfortable, and have a long cord. The giant, open-backed cups give a very immersive soundstage. We also think they look good as well. If you’re looking for at-home headphones, the DT 990 PROs are a great option. We highly recommend these… Mark Brezinski
